Let me clarify a few things about the hair industry.

Through reading thins on the internet and answering client's questions I have seen and herd a lot of things. Some of the things I have seen, herd and been asked have varied. People are wanting to know why is getting your hair expensive, why are products expensive and why is box color so wrong. First off let me start off by saying that as a person you need to take care of yourself. Yes, getting your hair done can get expensive, depending on where you go. Some places are overpriced or your just not getting what you pay for. Doing hair isn't charity work. You are receiving a service that you have to pay for. People also wonder why it cost more to get your hair styled. The reason why it cost extra is because the stylist is putting in more work to style your hair. She/he doesn't want to stand there for a hour for nothing. Another question I am asked is, "Why does it cost so much to get your hair colored?" The answer for that is stylist have to go and purchase the color and then spend at least a hour and a half coloring, cutting and styling your hair. Box color can turn into a nightmare for you and the stylist. I've seen a girl try to color her hair black (with a box) and it turned BLUE! Just like a smirf. As a stylist we know what and what not to mix together to get the right color your want. You cant just pick a color and put it on your hair. Color doesn't work like that. We went to school and are trained to know what and what not to do.
Any good stylist always try to recommend products for the clients hair. When you buy the cheap stuff from Wal Mart or any other store it normally dries out your hair. They add waxes and fillers that leave build up on your hair and it causes your ends to feel dry and your roots to look oily. When you buy products at a salon a stylist is always there to help you pick the best product for your hair. For most stylist it's not about the money it's about you looking your best.

Shampoo's and conditioners

As a stylist I often run into a lot of clients who have dry or damaged hair and use the wrong shampoo and conditioners! When you go shopping sometimes people think, "oh well this is a cheap item, there is probably something wrong with it. It is probably flimsy or breaks easily." Well that also works for shampoo and conditioners. The cheaper the product the worse it can be! Pantine, Herbal Essense, Garnier Frutice etc. are terrible products for your hair! They live build up on your hair which dries your hair out! I have clients that come into the salon and see the prices of products, some of them don't mind spending the money, but others are shocked to see the high prices. Yes, buying products can be expensive, but when you buy the liters of shampoo and conditioner you can save money! It last longer. Also, a lot of people don't realize that Pantine and all of the over the counter shampoo's and conditioners can strip color out of your hair, even the one's that say COLOR CARE!! You certainly don't want to go to the salon and spend $80 or more and it strip the color out of your hair within a couple of weeks!!
